Who are you?
My name is Chanry and most people know me from my blog The Hungry Gnome. My day job is Social Media Manager at The Generator. I also contribute to the Good Taste section of Hamilton Magazine. I am an avid food truck chaser, dog lover and bacon aficionado. **Full disclosure – our dearest Chanry had quite the 2016 – she got hitched in a backyard ceremony, then her beloved took a job in Calgary (!!!!) so we are currently missing our little gnome, but counting down the days until she returns!
Where did you grow up?
East end for life <brap, brap> lol you can take that part out! (*note I’m leavin’ it in :))
Where do you live now?
Still in the East end but currently looking to relocate (within Hamilton)
What do you think has changed about Hamilton over the years if anything?
There have been so many changes in the past few years it’s like a brand new city. I moved away for three years to work out West and when I came back, the hammer reinvented itself. Suddenly surges of young professionals were making changes to the city. There was this movement of creative cats coming into town and all of a sudden Art was the new steel. New restaurants and business were popping up left and right and the community was just embracing it all. I think instead of commuting to bigger cities for entertainment, food, and leisure people decided to develop those things they valued right in their own back yard. Gone are the days of driving into Toronto for a good meal, or a show – there are exceptional restaurants right in the city and outstanding music venues downtown. There is nothing a “big city” can offer that Hamilton doesn’t have anymore.
What do you think the best and worst things about this city are?
I’m slightly biased but the food scene here is by far the best thing about the city. All of the restaurants, from high end to cheap eats are phenomenal. There is a great foodie community in Hamilton that supports each other. The sense of community and “small town love” is also my favourite thing about Hamilton. I always say we are a big city with a small town heart. People get to know each other here. Everyone has a story and Hamilton is the city where you can share your story. Improvement? Potholes. NOTHING drives me more insane about this city than the potholes. And just when you’ve memorized where the potholes are and you swerve your car to avoid it – a new one shows up! ARGHHH!! Ya feel me? So frustrating!
What advice do you have for anyone considering a move to Hamilton?
HURRY UP! This city is booming and you don’t want to miss out. Everyday you discover something new. I know that sounds sooo cheesy but Hamilton really is going through a change and it’s a great thing to witness.
What are your favourite places and things to do here?
I love to explore the trails. We are the waterfall capital of the world and every chance I get, I try to see as many of them as possible. Naturally going out to eat is a favourite past time of mine. I don’t like to stay in one spot, I’ll usually start with oysters’ and cocktails at 2 Black Sheep, then maybe head down to Korea House for bibimbap and then finish the night off with drinks at The Ship. Popup Hamilton and Supercrawl are probably two of my favourite events. Supercrawl happens once a year and it is Canada’s largest outdoor music and art festival. Popup Hamilton is a monthly pop up that is held in and around the city. Every dining experience is a unique one.
Of all the things going on Hamilton these days – what are you most excited about?
That’s a tough question to answer. There really isn’t one thing that excites me, the whole #hamont movement excites me. Is that a good enough answer? Can I just say that? Just follow me on twitter & instagram if you want to know what I’m excited about. I am always talking about what excites me… till the next thing comes up and them I’m raving about that!
