Who are you?
My name is Christina Mulder and I am a mother of four. I recently decided to leave a career of 12 years to stay home with my children, follow some bucket list dreams and start my own small business. My business is named Servita and I create custom culinary experiences for my clients, from catering to event planning. I like to aid in the art of a great party, where food brings people together and I help the client relax and enjoy their company.
I am also founder of The Santa Cause which is a fundraiser focused on local community groups that are working towards the betterment of Hamiltonians. Poverty prevention, ending childhood hunger, supporting families through difficult medical struggles, are just some of the initiatives chosen over the years. We raise money to aid in extending care for those in our community and do so by engaging small business owners to donate prizes and services.
And I am a huge advocate for local businesses, and have co-founded a Summer Market Place called Saturday’s in the Park, commencing this year. It will highlight small businesses, local artisans, great food and Hamilton Parks.
Where do you live now?
We live in the Red Hill area. We chose this area because we were able to purchase a large home, close to schools and amenities at a reasonable price. And we fell in love with our home as it had the space we needed for our growing family.
What do you think the best and worst things about this city are?
The Best things about this city – The Rec Centres and the many program they provide for their community members. Our Health Care Centres are numerous and specialized. (McMaster Sick Kids, Juravinski Centre, St. Joe’s Ambulatory etc) The numerous Community Groups aimed at helping those in need.
The worst things about this city – The Rec centres are under utilized causing funding not to be as prolific as it could be. Still the perception of the city being dirty and polluted.
What advice do you have for anyone considering a move to Hamilton?
Do your research. Check neighbouring communities. Explore the core, and support your local shops. Become part of the community, don’t just sleep in it. AND hire Jeannie to be your agent 😉
What are your favourite places and things to do here?
Mount Albion Falls hike. We check out the salmon running in the Red Hill Creek every year.
Tobogganing! (shhh don’t tell)
Buying our produce from the many fresh markets.
Frequenting Food Truck events.
Going for a stroll down to the lake to have Hutch’s fries and ice cream.
The Starlite Drive In
Of all the things going on Hamilton these days – what are you most excited about?
The revitalization of the downtown core. There seems to be a large generation of entrepreneurs trying to establish themselves and their businesses in the core. BIAs are following suit by becoming creative in their attempt to attract the community to visit.
Anything else you’d add that you think I missed or was / is super important to you? Here’s your chance!
I love how Hamilton is central to many smaller townships working hard to grow a sense of community as well. Surrounding the Hammer there are some great places like Fruitland/Winona and their farmlands. Binbrook and Ancaster Fairs, parades and heritage markets. Dundas Buskerfest gaining international attention and Burlington’s Spencer Park Music/Children’s/Rib fest!
