Decisions, Decisions
So the thing about being a REALTOR®, is that it doesn’t all of a sudden stop you from being a human being, with all the same emotions that we try to keep in check with our buyers and sellers. So what happens when the professional wants to sell THEIR home?
My husband and I came upon this dilemma over this last month – well, ok, maybe it was more me than him. When you’re immersed in the market, visiting all sorts of different homes, seeing what neighbourhoods are growing and where values are increasing, it can be difficult to sit back and not jump on board.
We live in the North End of Hamilton – bought here 3 years ago while it was starting its resurgence, but still early enough in the process to get the warnings to rethink the decision. Fast forward and all of a sudden we’re in the “trendy” north end, and we’re seeing homes on our street and surrounding areas consistently sell for over asking.
Alas, we came upon the same struggles as all sellers – when is the magic time? Do we wait, do we move now? CAN we move now? What needs to be done to the house to get it market ready? How much can we realistically expect – can we port our mortgage, if so at what cost?
I think it’s important for us as professionals, to go through this process to remind ourselves what it feels like to be in the middle of all sorts of questions, many of which have no concrete right or wrong answers, no guaranteed results. In the end we decided to hold off – do some improvements that will add to the home’s overall appeal, but also to our own personal enjoyment of it – AC went in today! And one of the elements that helped us get to that decision, to navigate our motivations, was to have one of my fellow REALTORS® come through the house offering her professional opinions!
