Most communities have their favourite chip trucks which we also boast here in Hamilton – but in 2011 when Gorilla Cheese launched Canada’s first Grilled Cheese truck they helped kickstart a new industry that has put Hamilton on the map. The foodtruck scene is still young, but the city has worked closely with the various BIA’s, and with foodtruck owners to create an environment that is supportive. And the eaters of Hamilton have embraced it as well!
Follow your Faves!
You can follow your favourite trucks on their individual social media – most have active twitter and facebook pages, or you can
download the StreetFood App and follow Ontario Street Food to find out where your favourites will be. You can find them at different festivals, as well as various weekly events throughout the region. Sew Hungry, the award winning Restaurant and Food Truck Rally on Ottawa Street is seen as the kick off of the Food Truck season.
Where to find them?
The Hamilton truckers are joined by their amazing colleagues from surrounding areas like Toronto, Kitchener, Niagara and for many of the large annual events and the regular weekly dinner gatherings during the summer months. Some popular trucks have also opened bricks and mortar locations in recent years – Ottawa Street North is home to South Smoke BBQ House, Gorilla Cheese, and Curbside Burgers. Up on the mountiain, Jonny Blonde opened a take out joint on Concession in early 2016. In a departure from his fare at MeatVentures, Salar Madadi opened Pokeh serving up raw tuna and salmon bowls at the Hamilton Farmer’s market – so you can find them all season long!
Some of the weekly dinners:
United Food Trucks for Charity – Dundas Baptist Church, Dundas
United Food Trucks for Charity – St. James Church, Waterdown
Holy Food Trucks – Garner Road Ancaster
St Elizabeth Village – Garth / Rymal, Hamilton Mountain
Wheel Food Wednesdays – Binbrook United Church, Binbrook
Locke Street Eats – Stanley Baptist Church, Kirkendall North
