Who are you?
James Kayser, Owner/Operator of Butcher and the Vegan. George Brown College graduate, French Culinary. Former Operations Manager of Paupers Pub. Sous Chef at Picnic, KM at Le Pain Quotidien, Manager at Symposium Café, Events cook at Centro under Jason Carter (Susur Lee’s longtime Sous) Moved to Hamilton from Toronto with my wife in 2011.
Can we just say Wilco? We were looking for a place other than Toronto and came to town to see Wilco at Hamilton Place and I was reminded of its versatility as a city; I’m more downtown and my wife is more country, but were both 70/30 and need the balance that Hamilton provides. Living on the Bruce Trail in a multicultural environment is a dream come true, not just a no brainer.
Where do you live?
We live at the edge of Crown Point and the Sherman Hub, or more specifically, Blakeley for all the realtors out there. Where we tell people we live and the reason we live there, is Gage Park. So underrated.
My Mom has a saying about people who move to Hamilton “you’ll never see them again”, and it’s because there’s no reason to leave. Miss you Mom 😉
What resources were helpful to you in making your decision to move here and to your area specifically?
We did a lot of research on the area, in addition we have family that is from here so I was familiar with the general dynamics (and perceptions). We only looked downtown and had helpful realtors show us lots of improving areas that have the infrastructure we were looking for.
What resources do you WISH you’d had access to that would have helped?
The Metrolinx long term planning files? Lol, we almost bought in the North End and financially maybe we should have, but we felt The Bruce Trail Trumped the water.
What things surprised you the most about Hamilton?
People are friendlier than expected, coming from Toronto it’s always nice to get a full sentence out of a stranger, let alone a conversation, which we love. What surprises is the visceral attachment to one way streets from people of all stripes, really don’t get that logic.
What advice do you have for anyone considering a move to Hamilton?
Just do it now, before it’s too late. You won’t miss a thing. My Mom has a saying about people who move to Hamilton “you’ll never see them again”, and it’s because there’s no reason to leave. Miss you Mom 😉
