Who are you?
My name is Katie McClelland and I am a yoga teacher and owner of three yoga studios, one in Hamilton and two in nearby suburbs. I moved to Hamilton 9 years ago from Burlington to open my first yoga studio
Commercial rent prices! They were much lower than Burlington or Westbound towards Toronto. Once I opened my business here, it made sense to move here. Also, I had experienced the Wizard of Oz effect – I had spent over a decade travelling the world and in the end, realized home is where the heart is and where I ultimately wanted to plant roots.
Where do you live?
I love good restaurants and a friendly, neighbourhood feel and that’s what you get, and more, in the Locke st/Dundurn area I live in!
What resources were helpful to you?
Friends and relatives who had made the move here before me offered me guidance.
What resources do you WISH you’d had access to that would have helped?
That’s a tough question – I’m not really sure what is out there! I’m sure online support and accessible information has hugely expanded since I made my move!
What things surprised you the most about Hamilton? Good & Bad
I was pleasantly surprised how readily Hamiltonians embraced yoga! It’s as if they had been waiting for a place like mine to open. We were instantly busy, and have continued to feel a lot of love and support for the community. The negative feedback I have about the city has to do with red tape and city regulations when trying to open a business here. I have not felt supported by the city of Hamilton even though I provide a wellness service and employment for dozens of people.
What advice do you have for anyone considering a move to Hamilton?
Buy now! House pricing is only going up in this neck of the woods!
What are your favourite places and things to do around the city?
Of all the things going on Hamilton these days – what are you most excited about?
SuperCrawl! My sister’s band, Whitehorse, is headlining
