Who are you?
Hello, My name is Leesa Nauss. I am a Property Manager and I own Munchee’s Variety. We are a small Mom and Pop shop. Our goal is go back to the old days, when shopkeepers knew your name and cater to their customers. We specialize in being friendly, carrying things you can’t find in every variety store. We even bring in treats from the States. I have the pleasure of turning on Hamiltonians to one of the best Milk Shakes in the city! **March 26, 2015 CHCH Television just did a live on location shoot at Munchee’s! Check it out!**
I was born in Marion, Kentucky. Lived in Michigan before the move here toHamilton. I was brought to Hamilton in the name of LOVE 14 years ago. All started with an online Euchre game in Yahoo Euchre. My husband is Canadian and this is where his home was.
Where do you live?
We live in the West end of Hamilton. In the beginning my property manager job chose the West end location for us. We love it here.
What things surprised you the most about Hamilton? Good & Bad
GOOD: The size of the city amazed me. I was coming from a small town. After being in business now tho, I realize it isn’t really as big as I thought it was when I first arrived. Diversity of people and cultures. AMAZED by all the beautiful places to hike, the gorgeous hidden falls and the parks. The welcome and the help I received from all by business neighbours. They have been amazing! The festivals. Hamiltonians themselves, they LOVE their city and I love that! Art Galleries. I am still amazed at how much help there is out there for people in certain situations. Hamilton tries to provide and helps their own. When the community comes together. ie: Nathan Cirillo, Ti-Cats Fans, food drives. Hamilton’s very own Dancing guy, Jed Lifeson, always puts a smile on my face when I see him dancing downtown.
BAD: Festival of Friends being moved. The number of people on streets mainly in downtown core that won’t use the help that is provided. I believe more programs could be in place to take care of the mentally ill. I feel a lot fall in between the cracks. Bus lanes on King are awful and cause so much traffic in the downtown core. It prevents people from coming downtown. Empty buildings in Barton area, I think local artists would love to paint something on the plywood that would look more appealing than the ran down look it has going for it now. Make the owners of the buildings responsible for making the outside look more appealing to the city. Boys Toys for years was an awful eye sore as well as fire hazard right downtown.
What advice do you have for anyone considering a move to Hamilton?
It is a GREAT city. I suggest get out there meet the people and enjoy all it has to offer.
What are your favourite places and things to do around the city?
1. Dundurn Castle. I have been there so many times and every time I see or learn something new!
2. Gore Park, my first visit there when I arrived was Christmas time, so magical!
3. Hiking on the many trails.
Of all the things going on Hamilton these days – what are you most excited about?
I am most excited about the new energy I have been feeling downtown lately. I feel the downtown core is coming back more alive than ever. Excited to see store fronts being rented and new shops coming in.
