Who are you?
I had filmed a few projects here and was always so surprised there was such a big city so close to Toronto. We were both born and raised in Toronto, and were looking for a more relaxed and inspired lifestyle. We would come out to visit my husband’s family, and each time we would stop and eat, or walk around the neighbourhoods. Each time we found something new, and slowly fell in love with the city!
I knew I liked the vibe and was excited to live here. But I never anticipated meeting the amazing people I have, and feeling so inspired by the city.
Where do you live?
We live downtown at The Core Lofts. We were looking all over the place, but we kept wanting to be downtown, so we could walk everywhere. We love being close to everything, and are so happy with the building!
What resources were helpful to you in making your decision?
We chose to rent here before we bought, to get a better feel for the city, which was really helpful. Everywhere we went everyone was so friendly and shared their experience of where they lived, and that also gave us a lot of insight of what we wanted out of our neighbourhood. Mostly I asked everyone I met about Hamilton, and what their experience was, I was very nosey!
What resources do you WISH you’d had access to that would have helped?
We had a pretty great experience, everything kind of fell into place. Although it was hard at times to decide on an area when I didn’t know the city that well. It would have been great to go to an event with other newcomers, that outlined all the areas, and the benefits, or cons to each one.
What things surprised you the most about Hamilton? Good & Bad
I was surprised at how much I love it. I knew I liked the vibe and was excited to live here. But I never anticipated meeting the amazing people I have, and feeling so inspired by the city. I feel like there is so much excitement in the city, and I am so happy we are able to be here at such a pivotal time. I was really surprised at the growing lack of affordable housing. I really hope there is a way the city can accommodate the influx in residents and grow and develop, but still be able to house the people who are currently living here. Otherwise, it will just turn into another city that no one can afford to live in.
What advice do you have for anyone considering a move to Hamilton?
Don’t have any expectations. Approach it with an open mind, it will surprise the hell out of you, in a good way of course!
What are your favourite places and things to do around the city?
Of all the things going on Hamilton these days – what are you most excited about?
The food!! We eat out a lot, The Ship, Jack and Lois, Burnt Tongue, Green Smoothie Bar, The Aberdeen Tavern, La Luna, and of course the food trucks – Parm Fries at Meat Ventures and Jonny Blonde! We loved Jonny Blonde so much we had them cater our wedding- it was amazing!
