Who are you?
Susan Austin, former partner at Roux Commercial Kitchen, currently you can find me on Ottawa Street with the Other Bird folks at Black Sheep Snackbar. I moved here in 1992 from the Niagara region. My husband grew up in Burlington and worked in Hamilton.
My husband worked in Hamilton, rent was cheap and it was so accessible (highways). I had never spent any time in Hamilton at all prior to moving here.
Where do you live?
We live in the South/West Kirkendall community and have been in the same home for 20 years. We moved there initially because it was walkable to my husbands work, was a beautiful neighbourhood full of homes that needed updating so were still very affordable. We bought the worst house on the best street and haven’t left!
What resources were helpful to you in making your decision to move here?
Nothing really, the area was familiar to my husband, was highly walkable and we had friends in the neighbourhood.
What resources do you WISH you’d had access to that would have helped?
The internet was a baby 20 years ago so there is just so more info now!
What things surprised you the most about Hamilton? Good & Bad
Good-culture, architecture, we loved the old homes and big trees. Bad-that people still have this idea that Hamilton is not beautiful. Its got a bad rap!
What advice do you have for anyone considering a move to Hamilton?
Do it. You won’t regret it. Also, get to know different areas and communities don’t just get stuck in your own neighbourhood. Get out and explore!
What are your favourite places and things to do around the city?
We love the scene on James St.
The Harbourfront is outstanding
Of all the things going on Hamilton these days – what are you most excited about?
