Who are you?
I am Sue Littleton, the operations manager at Donut Monster. I moved here in early 2012 with my son and his father.
Why Hamilton?
I had a few friends from Halifax who had moved to Hamilton and loved it. They spoke so highly of the arts scene and access to green space. I was tired of paying astronomical rents in Toronto and Hamilton seemed like a good spot between my former in-laws in a Woodstock and the pals we were leaving in Toronto.
Where do you live?
The Delta. I knew I wanted to be within walking distance of a French immersion school.
What resources were helpful to you in your search?
Friends, HWDSB site, my realtor
What things have surprised you the most about Hamilton?
I have been surprised by the amazing collaborative nature of many small businesses in the city. It is a very friendly place to do business.
What advice do you have for anyone considering a move to Hamilton?
Leave all your pretense on the skyway. This town is no nonsense town.
What do you wish you known BEFORE you moved here?
That there were huge swaths of food deserts.
What are your favourite places and things to do around the city?
Of all the things going on Hamilton these days – what are you most excited about?
Food.
Anything else you want to add?
I would warn people moving from away that they may notice things are not necessarily as convenient here as in other cities but that doesn’t mean this place needs to be “fixed”. Hamiltonians are very proud and being respectful of the hard working history of this town is paramount. Also, there are more excellent coffee shops per capita than in any other city i have lived in.
